Dangerous Items list for household goods.
These are some of the items included in the Do Not Pack list.

Packing is a process that takes a lot of planning and consideration, and it is always helpful to know beforehand what you should leave out to move in your own vehicle. The Do Not Pack (or dangerous items) category includes a few household products that are hazardous materials and often illegal to move commercially (for example, the propane tank for a grill). If you are hiring any professional College Station mover and its packing services, the packing crew will not pack these items and will leave these items out for the consumer to dispose of or carry in their individual vehicles to their new home.

Dangerous Items List

For your protection and safety do not pack the following items:

  • Aerosol cans regardless of content
  • Heating agents such as Sterno
  • Nail polish and remover
  • Any type of gas in bottles or tanks, such as propane or oxygen
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Paints, varnishes, solvents, thinners and oils
  • Ammonia, bleach and other household cleaning agents
  • Chlorine granules or powder, as well as other pool products
  • Muriatic acid (also known as hydrochloric acid)
  • Auto batteries
  • Charcoal/lighter fluids
  • Matches, lighters, and other lighting products
  • Ammunition (Bullets)
  • Any other combustible product

These items can (and should) be disposed of properly and replaced when you move into your new home.

Perishable Items:

You should always transport perishable items and items of personal importance in your personal vehicle. If these items are placed on the truck, their condition on arrival at your new home cannot be guaranteed.

  • Frozen/refrigerated food
  • Produce, such as fruits and vegetables
  • Open food items
  • Plants both indoor and outdoor
  • Prescription medications

Items of Value:

  • Stocks, bonds and securities
  • Collections, such as coins and stamps
  • Insurance documents
  • Currency
  • Jewelry and furs
  • Important documents such as birth certificates and Social Security cards

Our professional staff of movers focuses on our clients’ specialty moving needs by providing safe and secure packing options for all your antiques, pianos, safes, and more. Our clients’ valuables are extremely important to us and we will securely pack, protect, assemble, reassemble, and handle your valuables with extra care- while assessing your specific needs to make sure the job gets done right and you get your valuables to the new location in one piece.

Specialty Moving Services That We Offer

ARTWORK / ANTIQUES

Sarge’s Moving Services provides for the safe and secure packing, crating and transport of paintings, antiques, sculptures, tapestries and other types of artwork. We request that our clients who intend on having us move their artwork make an appointment with one of our specialists in order to assess the exact transportation needs for each piece (or their entire collection). We can then provide a detailed plan regarding the proper materials we recommend to pack each type of art, as well as suggest the handling techniques and transportation environment. This allows us to give each client our best possible transportation recommendations for that piece or for their entire collection.

CRATING

Sarge’s Moving offers a range of crating services. We typically visit our clients to assess their exact crating needs, measure the item they will be crating, get an estimation of value and then build a custom crate designed specifically for that piece. Smaller pieces may be transported to our warehouse for custom crating, or if the item is too large to be transported we can build the custom crate on site. We also offer crating services that can be completely independent from our moving services. Solid custom crates are often built on site for an item that is to be shipped by another transportation company.

GRANDFATHER CLOCKS

Grandfather clocks require great care. We employ a special process to ensure success in transporting them:

  1. We wear protective gloves when handling and removing the weights and pendulum.
  2. The weights and pendulum are carefully wrapped for safe transport, labeled with each weight’s proper position.
  3. Our team blankets and shrink-wraps the entire clock before we load and secure it for transport.

When the clock arrives at your new home, the same patience and care is used to set up your clock. We will rehang the weights and pendulum and reset the time before starting the clock.

PIANOS

Sarge’s Moving Services provides moving options for upright, baby grand, and even grand pianos. We provide specialized equipment to cover flooring, disassemble, load, transport and unload each type of piano. We do request that our clients notify us before the move for a couple of reasons:

  1. So that we can provide options and provide the proper equipment. Pianos differ in size and type so they may need a different type of equipment.
  2. So that we send the correct number of professionals needed to do the job safely.

POOL TABLES

Sarge’s Moving can help by disassembling and moving your pool table. We recommend that a professional pool table company handle the balancing and felting that most pool tables require upon reassembly.

SAFES

We move many different kinds of safes, from small office safes to large gun safes. Specialized equipment is often needed to protect flooring. It’s often also necessary to make sure that the safe is loaded, transported, unloaded and positioned/mounted correctly at its destination. The right planning and proper equipment is essential to moving a safe correctly and carefully. We ask our clients to contact us if the gun safe they will be moving exceeds 300lbs so that we can arrange a time which is convenient for them to meet with us to assess and plan the safe moving & be sure to have the appropriate equipment, number of movers and take the proper precautions to protect the safe and the home when moving those particular items.

Specialty Moving Services are a huge part of our business, and one that we are proud to offer. We are happy to help however we can- whether you choose us to move everything or just a single piece. If you have any questions or would like a specialty estimate, please contact us using the link below.

Moving boxes: types and how to choose them.
An example of different sizes of moving boxes.

Moving boxes vary greatly and each one is best used for a specific purpose. You might be wondering what exactly is the best way to pack each item in your china hutch or how to protect your large mirror. The best way to avoid any issues during your move and reduce the possibility of damage is always to educate yourself. Here is a guide to each type of common moving box and what to use them for!

Suited to fit many different household goods, moving boxes and cartons come in many shapes and sizes. Using the appropriate box for your needs can save you time and money. These are some of the basic types of boxes Sarge’s Moving Services uses on a daily basis, though there are some specialty boxes that are not included in this list.

Small Box (Book Carton)

The small box (book carton) is a small, easy to handle box designed for heavy items such as books, records or CDs. Dishes and pantry items (such as canned foods) fit great in this box, and for quick, easy access our team of College Station movers can stack them neatly in your new kitchen.

Medium Box

Often used for pots and pans, toys, non-perishable dry foods and small appliances, medium utility boxes are 3 cubic feet. Mediums can hold most averaged sized or odd sized items from around the house or kitchen and can also be stacked well without damaging the contents.

Large Square Box

Large square boxes are great for bulky items such as linens, towels, toys or lampshades. It is important not to overload large boxes with heavy items, but be sure to fill them to the top so that they stack better.

Dish Pack

Dish pack boxes use heavy-duty, corrugated double-wall construction for all delicate items such as china and dishes, crystal and glassware. Since these boxes are basically the size of a large box (but more rigid) they are great for fragile items.

Wardrobe Carton

Coming in various heights, this large carton has a hanger bar to accommodate clothes from your closet (or draperies). It’s much better than storing clothes in bags or in boxes where they will get wrinkled or tangled. Each wardrobe box can accommodate approximately 2-3 feet of hanging clothes. For example, if you measure your closet and you have 6 feet of clothing hanging, you will need approximately 3 wardrobe cartons. Sarge’s Moving sometimes places shoes or closet miscellaneous items at the bottom of grand wardrobe boxes to save clients time and money.

Mirror Carton

Telescoping cartons fit almost any picture, mirror or glass (such as a glass tabletop). These boxes are typically sold in 4 pieces which are put together to fit odd sized items. Just like regular boxes, some mirror/picture boxes open and close, but are sold in varying sizes according to the size of box you need to fit the item you are packing.

Mattress Carton

Available in king, queen, double, single (twin) and crib sizes; one box will only fit either the mattress or the box spring, so you will need two per complete bed. Depending on your move logistics, a mattress bag may be a better and more economical choice for you.

Waterproof Moving Boxes

Waterproof moving boxes are strong plastic boxes that range in size. If you expect a wet move or will store your belongings in non-climate controlled storage, you might purchase these boxes.

Plastic Totes

Plastic totes are available in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be purchased at many stores. They are great for storing many different items, but may not be the best fit for your move. Sarge’s Moving Services recommends that these totes never be overloaded and that the lid also be closable. If improperly packed or unsecured/taped, these have a tendency to break, be crushed or come open during transport.

File Boxes

The file box can be a good option when transporting the contents of a home office. It is threaded through with metal rods on the sides so that you can easily hang files and other paperwork.

Lamp Boxes

Lamp boxes aren’t categorically necessary but they’re useful for anything long, such as a golf club or telescope, and want to keep it protected during your move. It is made with a thicker base for balance and can be great for tall brass lamps and similar items.

Specialty Boxes

Special boxes can be used for things like guitars, rifles, and much more—though these usually have to be special-ordered.

In Summary

Since one of the most important parts of a successful move is proper packing, choosing the appropriate box for items will make your move easier, safer and faster. We are often asked how to make a move more economical- the answer is to first have the best moving plan possible. We believe a big part of that plan begins by being packed correctly. Using boxes that are free may sometimes save you money up front, but used boxes can break down and cause damage to the contents; used boxes may also be more difficult to stack. Standardized boxes, specific to the items you are packing and moving, which have the greatest durability possible, will end up saving you time and money on moving day.

Packing and Unpacking Tips and Tricks in The Bryan / College Station area.
Packing & Unpacking Tips and Tricks.

Packing & unpacking are very important parts of the moving process, and it is essential that they are done right. Many may wonder where to even start, how to stay organized and how to pack appropriately to ensure nothing gets broken on the journey to its final destination. If you decide you need help with just a little of the packing or even the entire packing process (whether it be your house, office or apartment) Sarge’s professional team of packers are here to help! Located in the Bryan / College Station area, Sarge’s Moving Services provides all the possible moving services one might need. In the meantime, here are a few packing & unpacking basics provided by our Sarge’s Moving team to help get you started.

Where to Start

Purchasing the right packing materials always pays off-whether it simply saves your possessions themselves or saves your mover time loading. Boxes of uniform size are more easily stacked and transferred by dolly. Such items as sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing peanuts and magic markers can be purchased at moving companies and truck-rental firms such as Home Depot and U-haul. Supplement with copious amounts of crumpled paper, blankets and pillows; even clothing can serve as a great buffer between breakable objects. EcoBox not only has great boxes but also has packing paper in bulk.

Pack one room at a time, labeling each box with a description of its contents and its destination (e.g., kitchen, bathroom). It is important to be as specific as you can because they will make unpacking much easier.

Keep the weight of your boxes reasonable. If possible, put heavy items in small boxes to make them easier to carry.

Don’t apply tape directly to polished or painted wood finishes, because removing the tape could ruin the surface.

Packing & Unpacking Tips

  • Start packing in advance.
  • Pack plates vertically, like records. They’ll be less likely to break this way.
  • Color-code boxes and other items with stickers or labels.
  • It doesn’t hurt to number your boxes.
  • Use wardrobe boxes to make closets easier to pack. Clothes in drawers can stay in the drawers if the mover blankets and wraps the furniture.
  • Remember: the heavier the item, the smaller the box. When packing books, use small boxes only.
  • Never use printed newsprint to wrap dishes. The ink may transfer to the dishes.
  • Don’t pack with food or supermarket boxes, because you never know if there are pests or if the box will be strong enough to support your possessions. Boxes of uniform size will also stack better on the truck and save time and space.
  • Label all boxes on top and side clearly.
  • Try to pack all electronic equipment (like stereos) in their original boxes. Otherwise use bubble wrap when packing these items.
  • Always tape boxes. Don’t interlock the tops.
  • Don’t use boxes without tops. Boxes without tops make it impossible to stack properly in the truck.

Don’t Forget!

  • Pack important and sentimental documents separately to ensure they will be easily accessible including: children’s health records, passports, family records, insurance information and photo albums.
  • If you take apart furniture and other items, make sure to tape all parts to the main base or place parts in zip lock bags and tape to base.
  • Take a photo of how your electronics are connected so you can remember how and where all the wires go.
  • Pack the items you will need immediately upon arrival in a clearly marked box or container- especially things like medications, a set of sheets, etc!
